Wolfen Days of August

How does one begin? August second has arrived and I’m looking at my goals for the year. The early part of 2013 was filled with heady ambition. Short stories by the pound. Novels completed and begun. Prizes for churning out words like ten-penny nails.

However, reality decided it needed a little time with me in an unmonitored room. After some ‘enhanced interrogation’ my ambitions are scaled back. I’m now focused on one goal, and one goal in particular: finishing Ivre.

Over the course of July I could barely peck out 400 words a day. One sick day, or a morning where I could not get the words in, and I was behind on my relatively low goal. I could not muster 13,333 words across the whole of the month. Driving on to finish the novel will take every last bit of energy.

And then there is my best friend from Junior High. He is back in town and wants to do a screenplay about the The Black Hand and the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand. Great idea, but I don’t have the energy or time to work on it.

So, gentle readers, what do I do? How do you tell one of your oldest friends “no?”
